1992 में समाजवादी पार्टी के संस्थापक, तीन बार उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री और संयुक्त मोर्चे में रक्षा मंत्री। वह लोहियावादी जिसने पिछड़ों और मुसलमानों की दावेदारी को राज्य की राजनीति की धुरी बनाया — और जिसका 1990 का अयोध्या गोली-आदेश बहस में उन्हें आज तक परिभाषित करता है।
