1977–2000, तेईस अटूट साल पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री और वाम मोर्चे का चेहरा। बरगादार पंजीकरण और चुनी हुई पंचायतों ने गाँव की सत्ता जिस पैमाने पर बाँटी, कोई और राज्य उसके पास नहीं पहुँचा; मरीचझाँपी और राज्य-मशीनरी पर पार्टी की पकड़ बहीखाते के दूसरी तरफ़ दर्ज है।
