चार दशक तक कांग्रेस के संकट-प्रबंधक — इंदिरा के दौर में और फिर मनमोहन सिंह के दौर में वित्त मंत्री, 2012-17 में राष्ट्रपति। 2012 में अपनी ही पार्टी के सलाहकारों को दरकिनार कर वोडाफ़ोन पर पूर्वव्यापी कर लगाया, फिर पूर्व राष्ट्रपति के तौर पर RSS के मुख्यालय में जाकर कहा कि बहुलता ही भारत की आत्मा है।
